As per the latest statistics, ever since the COVID-19 pandemic hit us, about 7.8 million have fallen under the poverty line in the States alone. Poverty is a global crisis that goes beyond us but as an individual, we still have the power to make some influential changes. While we may not be able to end it completely, we can make a difference to the people suffering from it.
At the Auroveda Charitable Trust, we work tirelessly to create opportunities for the underprivileged. Here are some things that we can all do to see a difference in the world.
1. Sustainable economic development
By developing and implementing sustainable economic growth policies, we allow the underprivileged section of our society to participate in growth. This enables growth across areas such as education and health. Several studies have proven that even a 10 percent increase in a nation’s average income can reduce poverty by almost 20 percent.
2. Challenge existing ideas
As a society, we may have certain preconceived notions about poverty. Therefore, if we wish to see a change in the world, it is important to challenge existing assumptions to avoid harmful biases. One of the most common misconceptions is that homeless people choose not to work. This narrative has created a lot of harm as it negates the uncontrollable systemic conditions that actually cause it. Finding employment is not as easy and accessible as some might think. It is a process that can be severely affected by the lack of a decent shelter, inequitable access to training, and mental illness. If you find yourself having believed this myth, it is time to change it. Do your research and try to understand the poverty issues that exist within your own community. Educating yourself and those around you on such matters goes a long way, allowing you to apply context and critical thinking.
3. Equality
One of the biggest reasons behind poverty is continued inequality. Despite living in progressive times, there are systemic barriers that affect certain groups, leaving them far behind in resources and opportunities. For a nation to get itself out of poverty, the solutions should be centered around identifying these groups and giving them a voice of involvement. One of the biggest inequalities that continue to persist is gender. Equality means that each person has the same results vis-a-vis the resources.
4. Access to technology and innovation
Providing access to technology and innovation can go a long way in terms of reducing poverty. This means making the internet more accessible and providing affordable energy. Research has shown that in Bangladesh, only about 40 percent of the rural residents have access to grid electricity. This can heavily impact the results and the opportunities to pave the path for a bright future for themselves.
5. Donations
There are several initiatives by non-profit organizations that focus on creating opportunities for the underprivileged and helping those living in poverty. During such projects, your donations go a long way. Our ‘Feed the Needy’ project was one initiative aimed at helping those most in need. You can easily find an organization whose mission is to eradicate these economic disparities. In such situations, there is no such thing as too little or too much money. All these donations add up to fixing housing inequalities, food insecurities, and a lot more. You can also choose to donate time by volunteering with a local organization. There are several ways to help the people of your community. All you have to do is connect with a place that will make it happen.
Eradicating poverty is not an easy task. There is a reason why it continues to taint our world. However, with the right motivation and awareness, there are big changes that we can see happening to empower women and children.
